What is Safegrad?
Safegrad is a SAFE, all-night celebration for every Graduate and his/her guest. The party takes place on the same day as the Graduation Ceremony and is held at the DARC Complex and Timber Lanes Bowling Alley. The event includes the Grand March, Dance, Giant Inflatable Games, Casino, Swimming, Movies, Bowling, Food, Prizes, and Auction. The party begins at 9 p.m. and ends the next morning with breakfast at 5 a.m. It costs a lot of money for rentals, games, music, food, and prizes, so Safegrad takes most of the school year to organize. Fundraising for this year’s Safegrad began in July with the Designated Driving Program. Other events and fundraiser’s that take place in addition to designated driving might include raffles, a Coffee House, clean up projects, etc. Donations and gifts from area businesses and organizations help reduce the cost of running an event of this size.
Who can help?
Volunteers are required in many areas. Safegrad is a community event in which parents and students in any grade can get involved. Students and their parents can volunteer their time and accumulate prize points for their Grad. Can you spare some time to assist with the Planning Committee, the Designated Driving Program, the Decorating Committee or the Event itself? You’ll be earning prize points, plus you’ll be helping Dryden High School students enjoy Graduation in a safe, fun environment.
What are prize points?
Prize points accumulate for any activity that a student or parent, grandparent, aunt, uncle, friend of the student does for Safegrad. These points accumulate from grade 9 until graduation. They are used the night of Safegrad for prizes. The prizes are picked in descending order from the student with the most accumulated points to the least; however, no student is left out. All in attendance when the prizes are chosen will receive a great gift. Students must complete their 40 hours of community volunteer time before accumulating points, but anything parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, or friends do will go directly to points.
Safegrad is a Community Project. All students who require 40 hours of community volunteer time to graduate can earn their hours by helping with Safegrad.
Many people have commented that Grade 12 parents should organize and chaperone the Safegrad Party, BUT… Who will take care of the last minute details on the day of the event if the parents are all at the Graduation Ceremony? How will parents manage to stay up all night to chaperone after setting up and decorating for several days? Who will stay after the party to take down the decorations and clean up? How will the parents do all this and also entertain a house full of out-of-town guests who have arrived to celebrate with them?
The current Safegrad committee believes that Grade 12 students and parents should primarily be involved throughout the year with fundraising for the event. Parents and students in other grades should take care of set-up, takedown and chaperoning so that when their own child’s Graduation arrives, they will be able to enjoy and celebrate without worrying about the last minute details of the party.
If you are a parent or a student (in any grade) who believes in this valuable life saving event, consider donating your time to help make Safegrad 2004 a huge success.
