Hello Wintles! What a great page. My father was Leonard Wintle,brothers Ron and Bert. Their parents were Bert and Edith, Edith's father was from New York city, but originally from Wales. I was interested to see Wintle means from the Windy Hill because i currently live on one! The Old Melbourne Jail used to be called Wintle's Hotel because a Wintle was the Governer there. I stumbled on your site by accident, and am fascinated with it. My Grandmother was Daisy Wintle, related to the Wintles in Deloraine, MB and Dryden, ON. She married Michael McDonald and had 4 children (actually I think she had 5 but one died) Marie, Joan, Fred and Donald. Marie is my mother, she married Donald MacDonald, and had 3 girls, Patricia, Maureen and Heather (me). I don't recall all the names of the Deloraine Wintles (Fred and George come to mind, but I can't be sure) but my mother would know who they all were.

I am researching the life and works of Henry Saxelby Melville Wintle, born in England in c1800 and died on 22.xii.1873. He is said to be 'one of the fathers of the Tasmanian press'. He lived and wrote as Henry Melville [aka 'Henricus']. Arriving in Hobart Town in February 1828, he had followed his brother, Samuel Henry Wintle [also recorded as S J Wintle], a shoemaker who had preceded him to Tasmania by some five years. Henry married a Miss Eliza Romney Fisher at New Norfolk on 4.ii.1832. She was the only daughter of Joseph Fisher of Philadelphia, USA. There is no recorded issue from this marriage. Henry left Tasmania about 1849 and returned to the UK, where he worked steadily on his 'magnum opus', 'Veritas', a treatise on freemasonry and astrology which was published posthumously. Scott Wintle has just finished competing in the 2003 World Disabled Water Ski Championships held at Almonte Springs, Florida. Scott is a Paraplegic. He competed in four events , Slalom, Trick and Jump. He won the Bronze medal in the jump and set a new Australian Record of 15.5 Metres. He finished fourth in the tricks. I like to reminess and by travelling on your maps of the Wabigoon ( rocks and bouys ) hazzards try to remember my way long ago to various lakes and bays. To make my long story longer can you provide me direction from the Gov't Dock (south end of Van Horne) to the island where Wink, Chuck and Bud built the first cabin? I remember going by snowshoe and by boat east of Anderson and maybe perhaps the island where the Indains laid there dead aboce ground back in the early 50's......

I am very familiar with the works of four Wintles; three of them London Silversmiths, Samuel (1783) George (1804-1813+) and Jacob (1826- 1848+). Frederick Holmes Wintle (1855-1925) may also be from this solid silver smith family. I collect their work whenever I can afford an item. My only other claim to Wintle-dom is Christopher ( Julian's son) and I were in the same House at Stowe School in the early 1960's.

Am currently travelling the world and am in Melbourne, Australia at the moment. I do have a family tree back at my father's house, which takes the family back to Thomas Wintle borne in Gloucestershire in 1765.There was the whole tree once apon a time but my cousins, whoi my aunt believes she gave it to now deny this. I am listed in the Wintle Australia page and now have a new E-Mail address. Your site is great, and very interesting to see so many Wintle's around the world. Our anscestors must of had a lot of spirit to move away from the home country and settle far away. I know that I very much admire my parents who sold everything in 1962 to move from UK to Australia, mainly to give their sons a better life-which they did. I think it is the Viking blood. Hello, there just happen to come across your site when looking for something for my husband, Gary. Since he is a big fan of Dryden I thought I would put my two cents in for him too. I was looking for Bill Higgins of Sandy Point Camp/Resort just to say hi to him from my husband. I think his son runs the place and dad has retired. My husband goes to this camp every year (sometimes two times) for about the last 25 years. I was up there in 1976 but I am kind of hooked on shopping over fishing so I haven't been back to the area. So if you see anyone from Sandy Point Camp, pass on a hi for us. I also happen to be in the fire business sort of, I am a police and fire dispatcher and I get to tell everyone to go. Great page Garth. Some former DHS Grads in Dryden are in the beginning stages to plan an all grade DHS reunion in the year 2000. Going to our cabin on the Upper Wabigoon River in August. Always stop in Dryden for supplies before heading out to North Star Lodge on Clay Lake. Beautiful country. My father has been going up there since the mid-60s.
